Morrows Party

Wednesday, June 11, 2003 at 5:43 PM
By

Well i have been gone for days and i am not sure why it has been a massive blur of different activities and many many stories over the last few days. It all started last Tuesday the 20th when my roommates the Morrows left to work the pit at the Indy 500 and then back to New Jersey. They are great clean and quite roommates very quality guys who never created a problem ever. Now if those roommates are moving out you know what that means that it was time to go ahead and drink for one week straight. So that night we went ahead and purchased a new grill it was picked out by Phelan’s Pub and it is a quality piece of equipment and let me tell you David Borys
brought his grill over for the memorial day BBQ and it was all good duel propane grills and a nine fillets, forty burgers, and three pounds of hot dogs. So it all started and it ended up with the BBQ today and i think i can remember some of that which inclucded 90 keystones, 24 coors light cans, and 24 coors light bottles all gone before midnight.
Tuesday = Mr Borys got some amazing steaks and we began the drinking oddessy.
Wednesday = Biggens of course.
Thursday = Not sure don’t remember.
Friday = Also not very sure…
Saturday = Yeah need to find out about that…
Sunday = Stopped drinking and went to see a movie… then back to work…
Monday = Memorial Day BBQ…

So I was just being a bum as usual today and got an odd email from P. Matthew Loveless: Department of Political Science Indiana University – Bloomington. He wanted me to remove his name from that military history of france that was widely circulated a couple months ago.
Nels
What’s up? Someone just sent me this. I am neither the author of this nor do I want to be. Please remove my name from “the military history of France” on http://www.nelslindahl.com/journal/200302.htm
cheers,
matt
So of course I removed his name from the article which is posted below. I feel terrible that his name was so widely circulated that I received copies of this history from seven different sources. So I have decided to post the first correction that has ever occurred from this editor in the form of an apology.
The military history of France :
Gallic Wars Lost. In a war whose ending foreshadows the next 2,000 years of French history, France is conquered by, of all things, an Italian.
Hundred Years War Mostly lost, saved at last by a female schizophrenic who inadvertently creates The First Rule of French Warfare: ” France ‘s armies are victorious only when not led by a Frenchman.”
Italian Wars Lost. France becomes the first and only country to ever lose two wars when fighting Italians. Wars of Religion – France goes 0-5-4 against the Huguenots
Thirty Years War France is technically not a participant, but manages to get invaded anyway. Claims a tie on the basis that eventually the other participants started ignoring her.
War of Devolution Tied. Frenchmen take to wearing red flowerpots as chapeaux.
The Dutch War Tied.
War of the Augsburg League / King William’s War / French and Indian War Lost, but claimed as a tie. Three ties in a row induces deluded Francophiles the world over to label the period as the height of French military power.
War of the Spanish Succession Lost. The war also gave the French their first taste of a Marlborough , which they have loved every since.
American Revolution In a move that will become quite familiar to future Americans, France claims a win even though the English colonists saw far more action. This is later known as “de Gaulle Syndrome,” and leads to the Second Rule of French Warfare: ” France only wins when America does most of the fighting.”
French Revolution Won, primarily due the fact that the opponent was also French.
The Napoleonic Wars Lost. Temporary victories (remember the First Rule!) due to leadership of a Corsican, who ended up being no match for a British footwear designer.
The Franco-Prussian War Lost. Germany first plays the role of drunk frat boy to France ‘s ugly girl home alone on a Saturday night.
World War I Tied and on the way to losing, France is saved by the United States . Thousands of French women find out what it’s like to not only sleep with a winner, but one who doesn’t call her “Fraulein.” Sadly, widespread use of condoms by American forces forestalls any improvement in the French bloodline.
World War II Lost. Conquered French liberated by the United States and Britain just as they finish learning the Horst Wessel song.
War in Indochina Lost. French forces plead sickness, take to bed with the Dien Bien Flu.
Algerian Rebellion Lost. Loss marks the first defeat of a Western army by a Non-Turkic Muslim force since the Crusades, and produces the First Rule of Muslim Warfare: “We can always beat the French.” This rule is identical to the First Rules of the Italians, Russians, Germans, English, Dutch, Spanish, Vietnamese and Esquimaux.
War on Terrorism , keeping in mind its recent history, surrenders to Germans and Muslims just to be safe. Attempts to surrender to Vietnamese ambassador fail after he takes refuge in a McDonald’s.
The question for any country silly enough to count on the French should not be “Can we count on the French?” but, rather, “How long until France collapses?”

20030310 (Want to Comment?) Free Ride America Essay #1 (remember anonymous posting is allowed)
I am going to go ahead and talk about something that most people know but are afraid to talk about. The consequences of free ride America when the means of production have all left and all that remains is an outsourced shell of an economy the brick and mortar is no longer stable. Indeed we have become a debtor nation in more ways than I could explain. To begin as the ride ensued America has become a nation that is 90% service economy this has several significant problems.
1. All production is thus dependent on the ability to import goods and have an economy that can sustain production with those imports.
2. Since the flow of money between services is dependent on the ability to sell those goods in other countries to continue to bring in external revenue streams.
3. Other countries thus have the greatest point of leverage since not only do they control the ability to produce by controlling the initial input but they are receiving the best source of revenue since they own the commodities as natural resources and are not just adding value.
20030308 (Want to Comment?) So I learned today that I need a one hundred and fifty word summery of my book Civic Honors: The possibilities of community now the only problem with that is that not only am I not a concise individual. Here is my best shot at writing the abstract:
150 Word Civic Honors Abstract Version #1
The design of the Civic honors program is to be implemented by a university to bridge academia and involvement in community. The implementation of this idea will involve connecting education to society, first at the university level, then by replication of the program. The positive message is that it is not only possible to spread change within the community but is designed to become a part of the very fabric of the community. Sounding the call for individuals to play a larger roll in fulfilling the needs of the community by finding organizations that they not only feel benefit the community but organizations with which they want to work with. The program will begin by the college providing the opportunity for individuals to not only volunteer within the community but also have the ability to provide an accurate list of opportunities that will allow individuals to find opportunities.
150 Word Civic Honors Abstract Version #2
Civic Honors is an idea about allowing a university to help connect individuals to the community with a strengthened sense of the value of volunteerism. The university has the capacity to be a centralized location for motivating individuals within the community to volunteer. Becoming a central repository for information on community involvement is central to building a network of connections that have the ability to create change within the community. Driving change within the community has to be the central goal of the Civic Honors believing in that goal drives the movement.
20030307 (Want to Comment?) Tomorrow is the big day, well the next big day for me it is the day of the Undergraduate Research Symposium. We will see its us the big social researchers against yes cellular biologist and chemists and such. I really am not sure how the two can be compared because one draws from qualitative social measurement and the other is based on highly scientific based quantitative measurements.
20030306 (Want to Comment?) Why do we stop pretending?
Every kid knows what it means to pretend playtime is a most for any child and is considered a healthy part of childhood development. Most kids with an active imagination and ideas are even considered gifted and while it might not be well adjusted it is a way of dealing with what goes on when you are young. The alter universes that are created are just as real as anything out side what you are doing. It is nice it pretend then as we get older it is considered an oddity even discouraged as time goes on. In fact those who never come out of that alter universe are deemed special and need counseling or greater investments of time. For instance my roommate Ryan really wishes he was a professional hockey player (mullet and everything) now this for him sometimes take on the qualities of pretend he coaches youth hockey and would play if they let him on the ice. I am willing to bet that sometimes he really does think he is playing and reality is suspended even for a moment.
20030305 (Want to Comment?) Department of Public Administration at the University of Kansas:
I have really enjoyed my years in college and I can tell you that I am a much different person today than I was when I started my collegiate career. I will be the first to tell you I had a lot of growing up to do. My growth as an individual and a student will become evident as I discuss some of the different aspects of my life. I think I will start with fall 2000 and work my way to the present. During my fall 2002 semester I got involved in several Internet startup companies including one that I founded during that semester. It was promising we had no problem getting invited to talk to people about what we were doing and we were on the right track. Working to build secure customizable databases within an artificial intelligence language (LISP) with the goal of creating a self-healing smart database. At this point in time I was also Vice President of Finance at Sigma Phi Epsilon at the University of Kansas, which had more than one hundred members. The house revenue is around half of a million dollars a year and during that time I was also serving as the house manager doing so much within the house including wiring it with over five thousand feet of wire for the internet I was voted Kansas Gamma

Out on the town

Great response to the Guest Book in the last day or so. Had a pretty good day so far and it is looking up for tomorrow as it appears we will get to into production on the Mayofia screener. (don’t ask) So went out with Mr. Borys this evening and got to go to the Red Lyon to have a few drinks before heading over to the Emerson Biggens. Well it was a rousing game of cricket that got the night rolling while drinking beers and eating popcorn. Megan and Debbie ruled the game of cricket. Now it was Megan’s birthday which was great to help celebrate and I got to see Jodi which is always a pleasant experience that brings back memories of the good old days when Seth roamed the hill at the University of Kansas. So we moved on to Emerson’s after a few beers and met up with Truebacka who is still wild I might add and we all signed a get well soon card for our usual server Amy who has alas broken a bone in her arm and will not be able to work for awhile. Now the better parts of the evening should be highlighted for instance when Jodi told Mr. Borys that he should speak to the girl at the bar about her rampant case of boredom. Now Mr. Borys of course went over had a rousing conversation that was deep and meaningful. Now she was totally digging Mr. Borys and guess what Mr. Borys did not even ask her for a phone number he just walked away in protest.

crazy jimmy and megan

Well I am not sure how productive it would be to start from the beginning so I have decided to work backward. When Crazy Jimmy hit the parking lot at the Barry Woods 24 movie theater he had no idea what was going to happen to him. We told him that he had to let Miss Megan out of the car and go park so I simply handed him a ticket and walked into the theater. Of course we were going to see the movie Chicago because I owed Megan a favor and she had told me that if I could get Crazy Jimmy to go to see Chicago she would be happy. So of course it was time to make sure that Jimmy believed that he was going to see a movie about street racing not a semi-musical called Chicago. If you could see the pain on his face when the movie started and he got to see singing and dancing galore he was less than pleased and is still calling me to tell me how terrible of a person I am for subjecting him to such a display. Back to the beginning of the day for a second and I would like to recall when John decided that he would eat 16 clams from the China Star now this is no ordinary task that’s allot of clams and well it scared the China Star employees very much. They had not seen such eating parlous of sheer stupidity in a long time. One of the staff had to tell him that maybe he should not eat very many because that is not a good thing to do. Interesting enough he annoyed the staff to the point that they would not give him anymore diet coke telling him that if he wanted another he would be forced to purchase another pop. Which was very funny to me at the time and well yes is still funny now.

Today was a good day it started off rather ruff having to go to four classes which were rather uneventful. I got to meet a very nice girl who is a biochemistry graduate working on her chemistry education degree. She was really a great person to talk to and check out this little fact she is the only other person I know who takes notes like I do in a journal. Not to mention she was a debater in high school. However I do have to say she was not interested in me which I found rather sad. So I enjoyed that part of my day anytime the opportunity to meet somebody that is quality presents itself I am always pleased. Now what I really want to know is why is it that every time I find somebody who is really worth my time she is never interested? Off that topic and on to the fact that I ended up going to Peking Taste for dinner its a Chinese buffet in Lawrence. One of the cheapest and rather decent from a rather selective set of entrees. So this rather random kid just starts looking at the fish tank for no real reason. Just looking at these fish as if they are the greatest thing since sliced bread. Now the kid just pushes the glass and in absolute shock realizes that the water is not just hovering there but it is glass. If this kids was younger than maybe eight I might understand. Mr. Borys just chuckles and I almost choke to death on some fried rice. So therefore I knew that today was going to be one of those days. I drove out to North Kansas City from Lawrence which is about a forty-five minute drive only to find out that Crazy Jimmy has been declared OIO (obligated enlisted officer) in the pizza deliver business and will not be able to go out this evening. So naturally I call Shalunky to see what he is doing this evening and he is eating prime rib and other festive foods at the country club. The company his father owns was having the yearly dinner out for the executives at the country club for some strange reason. Now dejected I again call Mr. Borys to find out what is going on and low and behold he wants to participate in some pool playing. Which I do enjoy with reckless abandon at all times for many reason most will remain nameless. We went to Astros which I forgot to take a picture of perhaps I will get one tomorrow and fix that problem. At Astros pool hall no open tables existed so what did Mr. Borys and I have to do at that point. Find the best people in the hall and take the table from them and sit back and relax. Three hours later still holding the same table we decided to leave victorious and give the table away rather than ever loosing it. So now I am at home in front of my computer thinking of writing something meaningful while watching a quality movie.

# 20030120 – Went wild today and started writing some new stuff and added some new sections one called My Information and updated a bunch of pages around the domain. I was very tired today and several things have changed for the better and for the worse in the last few days. I took Miss Jaime to go see the movie A Guy Thing which I certainly enjoyed because it was a great movie. I of course went to dinner before the movie and had one of the better dinner rolls that I have had in a long time. More importantly I seem to find more and more time to be able to accomplish things. I also recently decided to attempt to enforce my policy of not consorting with woman who decided that I was not good enough for them. I never really know what is going to happen next but now is the time to do something that will count and to steer my life in the best possible direction.

# 20030117 – Today is a good day for writing, snow exists outside its cold and more importantly its a day to sit in front of the television anticipating the yao vs. shaq show.

# 20030116 – So today I spent some time working on the design of the page I think it is better than before and that is what it is all about working to make sure today is a little better than the day before. I am working on getting some of the current projects updated and that should be the beginning of some good quality content on the page.

# 20030111 – So I have been away for a few days working hard on a project I like to call the civic honors movement. It is my hope that the pages that I have written for that movement will have some impact on the way people view working with each other.

# 20021126 – Have decided to write a novel called Forgotten Dream which I have outlined and hope to finish before the winter holidays. I am also attempting to write part of The Agency tonight I think I can write for about five hours. I think this will be a test of my creative abilities. Alas I got distracted and could not really focus on my work.

# 20021124 – I have given up entirely on writing my work in pen first and have started to write exclusively for web publication and skipping that editing that I had been doing with word documents. I believe this will help me move a little faster in getting content to the web rather than leaving it idle in document form. The Dreamchaser series has been split into three novels currently and reflects that change it is for the most part finished and hopefully I have done some justice to the concept I have been working on for awhile. Got stuck on chapter nine in the company but I have the rest in my head have just not had enough time to type it out. Will finish out the novel tomorrow I should have the time.

# 20021119 – I am working on the Dreamchaser Series hope to finish up most of The Company before then end of tomorrow. This is my goal I hope it is realized before the end of the day. I might have to sleep but we will see what I can get done.

# 20021118 – I had to put down the Dreamchaser series for about thirty minutes while I added the first update to the Crazy Jimmy series which is one of my favorite sets of stories and I hope that in the end I will be able to do it justice as there are many tales yet untold within the world of Crazy Jimmy.

# 20021117 – Today I have decided to put down the Roadrunner and finish the Dreamchaser series I am now writing and working on the outlines for the next three novels in the series. It is my hope to finish this four book series in a the next few months. I feel that this will be a well rounded way to think about some of the characters and issues that were brought up in the void.

# 20021116 – For one of the first time I can remember today I gave up everything to finish dream chaser I got the rest of the novel all worked out and put to paper. I was able to spend some time thinking about what would be next and if I wanted to go beyond eleven chapters and start work on part two or what I really wanted to do. I have wanted to work on Free Ride America for awhile, but promised myself that I was not going to work on it until dream chaser was finished in more detail. I have also decided to make a few changes here and there throughout the web space. Hopefully I will have time tomorrow to finish up Roadrunner.

# 20021115 – Having trouble finishing the novel I am stuck in the middle of chapter ten go figure. If you know me then you can expect that this kind of thing would happen anytime I need to get something done for myself I finish it. I worked out the middle chapter conflict that I was worried about and have got the final plots twists just waiting to be unleashed in these last two chapters. Hopefully the rest of this will get flushed out in the next few hours no better time than the present and it always seems like the present is really early in the morning.

# 20021114 – Today I worked out a few issues with the dreamchaser novel the middle chapters are proving to be more difficult to navigate than before I may have to go ahead and draft the rest of the novel and come back for character development in the earlier chapters. Right now it just does not feel complete. I am considering working with a new editor the details will be worked out shortly if the deal goes through. I am not sure how much difference reading my work with edit will be, however I hope it makes the task a bit more bearable.

Civic Inovation in America: Sirianni & Friedland

Wednesday, December 4, 2002 at 1:51 PM
By

What is real within the civic community? How pervasive is this idea that a disconnect exists within modern society that the introductory sentence of this reading would feel the need to make the claim that a demonstrated capacity of civic innovation exists. Most theorists would probably look back to the good old days when the social fabric of America was strong and wrapped the community within a shield from the outside world. Now it seems that rather than looking at models of capacity it seems that to make an argument we need to make the assumption that capacity exists. However this is a very interesting assumption because if the capacity for innovation exists as is claimed throughout chapter one, how do we account for the sheer lack of participation. This is such an important distinction in the process of identifying the constraints of social capital and other measures that involve concepts of policy learning, organizational learning, and democratic theory.

There are sets of chemical equilibriums that control the functions of the mind. The time needs to be taken to look at the history of psychology and its focus on the symptoms of disorders and specific disorders themselves. What if it worked like this?

Form, Function, and Structure

Everything has to be based on something
And if that something can be seen
Or if we even know that something existes
Then we have to evalute that something
As if it is not the absolute nothing
Now this is not to say this is a question
Of value and it discards everything
For there must always be something
And that something is in question here
It is that which we see or that we know
What we think it is could be anything
We have to take that anyting and begin
The biginning is what is the problem
Abilities are required and tested
Most important we have to be striving
Now to actually evalute the world
The real has to be taken into full account
Here are the set of core assumptions
A set of core assumptions:

Spin Cycle

Some people believe that Clinton administration was about charm and charisma. However anyone who knows how Clinton’s been surviving knows that his strategies are all about the Spin Cycles and playing hardball. Howard Kurtz recounts the Lewensky scandal and other various scandals and how they were handled. The attempts by White House lawyer David Kendall and other individuals to control the tide of the media are concealed in great detail with what seems to be a truly inside look at politics. If you could some up the entire book in a few sentences or a slogan it would be,

Feeding Frenzy

Monday, October 29, 2001 at 1:39 PM
By

The creation of the images and information that bind us to the assumptions we create to understand what we see and how it may be interpreted by cognitive misers is the only the beginning. Beginning to understand the complex nature of competition between the media and politicians to set the agenda is not only root of the feeding frenzy but also problematic because it goes much deeper into the nature of society. The assumptions that focus on social factors as well as the political create the modus jaborandi for the feeding frenzy. The factors that create feeding frenzies that I find to be most interesting are the triangular focus of the press, social conditions, and of course, the politicians.

The press in the United States is dominated by the need for (and expectation of) timely dissemination of information at least when it comes to the cable news networks. This is especially true since the events of September 11 ” these events created a definite feeding frenzy for information. Following this tragic event, the scare of anthrax has set a most definite frenzy almost bordering on hysterical need for information. This need is fueled also by the expectation that one can log onto the web and find immediate news. A frenzy that I might add was not satisfied in any way on September 11 because it was impossible to access the web. However, the backbone of the press system is the system of journals and magazines that, in my mind, set or create the agenda for information dissemination to the masses. Those are the key indicator of how long a feeding frenzy will last. The terrorist issues that are currently on the front pages of the papers are there because that is what the masses are most interested in reading. Now the reason this will continue to be a feeding frenzy is that the magazines and journals are planning to continue to release discussion of these events in ways that involve deconstruction as well as alternative analysis. This revitalization of the news cycle to repeat the print circulation is necessary to sustain the frenzy as is evident by ‘special editions’ of the Kansas City Star sold for $5.00 and other print editions that feed the frenzy for information and opinion.

That said, now the elite media agents that feel the need to increase profit margins create the only reason that the feeding frenzy is possible at all or exist in some cases. The basic social economic conditions in the population must be primed for the need to focus on some kind of external source. Or the in the case of the terrorist actions, the public is interested in getting new sources of information since this unique event has required a new association through cognitive misery. The public is at the same time repelled by but also pulled toward the need for information. The reality that individuals in the social system as it is focused on a new stream of information dissemination is a positive step forwarded for the education of the populous. Now when the correct social conditions occur the manufacture of a media freeing frenzy. Now the faction that is directly benefiting in this media feeding frenzy is the politician. One could argue that they are using this set of social conditions to dominate the lives of the populous and change the set of social controls that were in place with a new set of draconian measures that are meant to tighten the new social control.

In conclusion, the creation of the images and information that bind us to the assumptions we create and the complex nature of competition between the media and politicians to set the agenda is not only root of the feeding frenzy but also problematic because it goes much deeper into the nature of society and its cognitive misers. The factors that create feeding frenzies that I find to be most interesting are the triangular focus of the press, social conditions, and of course, the politicians. It is this strange triangular focus that deconstructs at least at some level a basic understanding of the feeding frenzy. Using all three of those criteria is the only objective hope to understanding the factors that create and sustain feeding frenzy.
