Can Nels spend an entire weekend without the internet? During the course of the upcoming weekend, Nels will endeavor to sustain a complete moratorium on all internet usage. In fact, Nels will not use a mobile computing device capable of achieving internet connectivity. The rules will only allow the use of standard electronics incapable of internet access. For example, devices allowed during the weekend include cellular phones, GPS receivers, automobiles, and digital cameras. Nels will provide live coverage of the event using the Short Messaging Service (SMS) associated with cellular phone text messaging. In order to avoid internet access, the micro blogging service Twitter will functionally transfer the SMS messages to the internet making them available worldwide.
