Single minded purpose

Remember the potentially problematic nature of sustaining a single-minded purpose. Finishing the dissertation process is a top priority. Each day presents a writing opportunity. Allowing the possibility of action to out a way the possibility for in action requires persistence. Every day I schedule a certain amount of focused writing time. I have the opportunity to create just about any writing environment. What type of writing environment sustains a single-minded purpose? How does focus translate into quality writing? Each writing project provides a unique opportunity. Depending on the situation, focus can carry the same meaning as motivation.

During the course of working on past projects, I have had the opportunity to write over one million words. Novels, short stories, and other works of prose or poetry deserve the opportunity for revision. Some weblog entries from the past deserve extensive editing. I think working backward in time as an editor can at times serve a purpose. Sometimes comparing previous weblog entries with current weblog entries can illustrate differences in writing style. Journal writing serves as a tool for personal reflection. Writing with the intention of publication is different from journal writing for personal reflection.

I just sneezed and the dictation software translated the sneeze into, “the fifth.” Perhaps a writer working with a single-minded purpose could use the dictation software translation of a sneeze to produce an entire work of prose. At this moment in time, I am not feeling that creative.

I have been thinking about joining the online cookbook revolution. Over the course of the last few years, I have been collecting and developing recipes. Exceptional cooking skills and culinary training are not prerequisites to developing an online cookbook. Cookbooks are being oversupplied just ask any retail book supplier or online bookstore representative. Fortunately, with low overhead and relatively no barrier to entry the population of online cookbooks will continue to expand. Eventually, the multitude of online cookbooks will experience a reduction to a collection of the best possible recipes.

Online cookbook development will require building a template format that standardizes the display of a recipe. I have become interested in recipes that provide complete instructions about preparing food from scratch. Most recipes involve bringing a collection of previously prepared food together. If a recipe calls for the inclusion of vegetable stock, then the recipe should explain what is included in vegetable stock. Online cookbooks provide the opportunity to express highly refined preferences. A group of people who share specific interests can work together to advance those interests. Entire online forums about cooking are devoted to highly specialized techniques. The more specialized a cookbook becomes the smaller the potential audience for that cookbook becomes. Specialization represents a challenge within the traditional publishing industry, but specialization represents an online opportunity.

The central difference between the traditional publishing industry and online publication methods is the expectation of profitability. Online publication methods utilize advertisement strategies instead of a single point of purchase strategy for profitability. Some hybrid cookbooks exist that provide access to online content and the opportunity to purchase a published version of the cookbook. Unlike traditional publishing arenas, a recipe author should expect revision and imitation. In reality, revision and imitation are signs that a recipe is successful.
