Gus is Gone

After visiting the scenic Garden of the Gods and the interesting privately operated Cheyenne Mountain Zoo complex, Gus was ready to make the drive back to Kansas City. For some reason more people seem to be visiting the new house in Colorado Springs than visited the apartment in Boulder, Colorado. Perhaps the availability of guest rooms has something to do with the sudden increase in visitors or maybe people are visiting to see Peppercorn the dog.
Gus was actually willing to help with the fence-building project, the dirt redistribution project, or even the rock dispersion project. Maybe I should have listened to all of the people who warned me about all of the work associated with homeownership. Certainly, learning about all of the potential methods of landscaping is nearly a full time job. Right now, everything related to landscaping is on hold until the groundskeeper provides grass for the backyard. Apparently, the Kentucky blue grass comes in small rolls that cover the yard like outdoor carpet.
Anyone who has seen the Great Sand Dunes National Park understands the soil situation in southern Colorado. For some reason the problems of an arid climate are compounded by the presence of incredible amounts of sand. Ground that should be a mixture of clay and rich dark soil seems to be a combination of rocks and sand. Remarkably, wide varieties of weeds and a few sunflowers have been growing throughout the area. Landscaping requires purchasing healthy top soil to ensure that the Kentucky blue grass survives in Colorado Springs.
I hope that Gus had a good vacation in Colorado Springs. According to research conducted by Money Magazine, the City of Colorado Springs, Colorado is the best place to live in 2006. With any luck, Gus might have used similar criteria for vacation evaluation.
